CHAPTER 11
Owen walked in a haze of pain and grief. In the future he could never quite explain how he managed to lead the children to the village; perhaps some inner instinct had done it. Perhaps not.
All he knew was his mind was still back with his mate in that little cave.
One minute he was walking through the trees, the next he stood inside the village center, a number of Katria staring at him in varying shades of surprise and horror. Murmuring spread throughout the people as more and more gathered, looking at the children with wide eyes. The children seemed to hunch into themselves, and a number on them moved closer to Owen’s side seeking protection.
"What is the meaning of this?" Henni, the Katria High Councilor demanded. He marched forward until he was at the front of the gathering crowd, a pinched look on his sour face as he stared at the huddled group before him, his bulbous stomach straining under his robes. Behind him, standing next to the fire, his daughter Nia and numerous others watched in rapt amazement.
"Where are Raine and Ash?" Owen asked, ignoring the pompous man. "I need to speak with them immediately."
Henni sneered. "You have no right to demand to speak with the Alpha Chief and his… mate." The way Henni's mouth twisted over the last word was noticeable by all. "I am the High Councilor! I demand to know what is going on here and why you have returned with these—" again he sneered, "—human children!"
"Owen?"
Owen turned to see Raine pushing his way through the crowd, his faithful mate at his side. Relief rushed through him at the sight of his friend. Henni's caustic demands had started to stir up the crowd, and Owen had begun to worry perhaps he and Maltok had been wrong to think the children would be safe there.
Raine's eyes widened when he saw all the children gathered close to Owen's side.
"What's going on?" Raine asked as he rushed forward. He smiled encouragingly at the children before turning his confused gaze on Owen. His green eyes widened when he saw the two emaciated boys Owen carried. "What happened?" he asked, obviously upset.
"The orphanage," Owen said, voice hard as the memories of what he had seen played over and over in his mind. "What we found was awful. We got Lucah and Micah." Owen nodded at the small blond child clinging to his side, and the identical twin in his arms. "We couldn't leave the rest of them behind though. It was… bad." Owen shuddered, the motion making Micah whimper in his arms. Owen immediately turned to shush the sick little boy.
Raine nodded, eyes softening in understand. He, of all people, understood just how cruel the City could be to those who were helpless.
Ash looked around in confusion.
"Where is Maltok?" he asked. The Alpha Chief was notoriously protective of his brother, almost as protective as he was about his mate.
"Mal—" Owen's voice cracked, tears making his throat thick, and he had to stop for a moment while he got himself under control.
